Beginner's iPhone User Guide

Considering that the number of iPhone users in Romania has grown significantly in recent months, I have been repeatedly asked to make a post talking about some applications/settings useful to a user at the beginning of the journey.

From the very beginning I will tell you that this post is addressed to those who have done or want to jailbreak their phone. For those who don't want to do it, I'm sorry, but most of the interesting things happen on the other side of the barricade.

First of all, if you have the phone in your hand and want to jailbreak it, I recommend you to use blackra1n because from my point of view it is the easiest to use and most stable jailbreak program available at the moment:  jailbreak tutorial using blackra1n.

Secondly, if you want to unlock the phone, you have 2 options: either use the tutorial this to install ultrasn0w if you have baseband 04.26 and you jailbroken with a custom ipsw; either use blacksn0w if you have jailbroken using blackra1n: blacksn0w unlocking tutorial Windows, Mac.

Well, now that we have passed the technical parts, we come to the first thing that I recommend you do immediately after the jailbreak: modify the file where you have the settings for the Internet in order not to wake up with an additional cost without knowing where. The iPhone has a habit of connecting to the Internet by itself sometimes. To do this, you must first follow the tutorial this if you jailbroken with blackra1n, then this.

Ok, now we come to another sensitive point of the phone, the battery. Since at the beginning you probably only heard stories, but I will also tell you, the battery is quite weak, so here are my recommendations to extend the life of the battery as much as possible: set the screen brightness as close to the minimum as possible, leaving the auto-brightness option activated, turn off WiFi when you don't use it, turn off Location Services (GPS) when you don't use it, don't use your phone on 3G unless you want to surf the Internet, turn off Push if you don't need it (it's a BIG consumer energy). These are the settings I use, and depending on the use, I can get somewhere between 5-7 hours of use and about 2-3 days of standby.

From the settings we move on to the useful, from my point of view, and also necessary applications, which I install after every jailbreak. We exclude Cydia, which must be installed from the blackra1n application if you have jailbroken with blackra1n. Let's start with SBSettings, an extremely useful application from my point of view because it facilitates extremely easy access to some other important phone functions. The application is installed from Cydia, and can be opened by a swipe (left-right finger movement) at the top of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear in which you will have several buttons called toggles, which allow you to: disable/enable 3G/Edge, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, Airplane Mode, SSH, set the screen brightness, or to close certain processes. If you take a look through the settings, you will discover other functions such as: digital battery (if you don't have a 3GS), the possibility to change the time format, more sensitive swipe, etc. The second quite useful application is Install0us, which can also be installed from Cydia, it allows you to install cracked applications from the appulo.us website, for just ask tutorials. The third application is Mobile Terminal, which helps you install .deb files and allows you to change the phone's root password, an extremely extremely important thing that I recommend to everyone. A fourth application that I consider important is Privacy, which prohibits the phone from sending your information to certain companies creating iPhone applications.

These are the necessary applications that I install after each update, I don't install too many because, as you will discover in the future, many applications and games destroy the system and kill the battery.

Some useful applications now. The first one I remember is iCabMobile, a very good browser, which 100% replaces the iPhone's Safari, and is approximately 2 times faster than it. The second, for Twitter, is Twitterific Premium, a very easy-to-use application that offers all the necessary elements for a Twitter user. The 3rd is iGo My Way, a navigation application that I at least consider to be the best for Romania. It has the most complete maps and the GPS behaves much better from the point of view of location than in Navigon. Another very useful application is SnapTap because it allows you to take pictures using the volume buttons. SysInfoPlus is an application that gives you details about your phone: ram, cpu, battery, free memory, network, etc. It is very useful when you charge your phone, because at the moment the phone will erroneously show that the battery is 100% charged, but this is not true because the phone still accepts battery charging, at least that's what this application says, and it will show you when the battery is charged, the message Fully Charged. I also have an application for those who take a lot of pictures, it's called Snapture and it offers you a multitude of options for taking pictures. And last but not least, Appbox Pro, an extremely extremely useful application, which brings to your phone a whole series of options and gadgets that are normally missing compared to other phones: details regarding the battery and the processes that can be completed until consumption, translator, exchange rate , turn your phone into a flashlight, virtual ruler, more complex calendar, google books and much more.

These are my recommendations, as you can see, I don't load my phone with dozens of applications/themes/etc because that would mean loading it daily. Beware of Winterboard/BossPaper because it consumes the battery extremely extremely quickly, at the same time avoid installing many applications/games on your phone because you risk "upsetting" your phone and it will ask for an immediate restore.

If you have recommendations/questions/any other kind of suggestions, please leave them through the comments, I hope this little guide will be useful to you.
