The AirPlay function in iOS 4.2.1 gives us the possibility to stream video from our iDevices to Apple TV, compatible audio systems or any other devices supported by Apple. Unfortunately this function did not work between iDevices and Macs until yesterday when a small tweak called AirPlayer which also brings this functionality to Mac owners. Basically, you open this tweak, activate it, start a movie on your iPhone, select the AirPlay function, then your Mac, and the movie will play directly on the Mac screen.

What AirPlayer does is create and advertise a custom Bonjour AirPlay service that pretends to be an Apple TV. Bonjour is Apple's zero configuration networking solution for allowing devices and applications to communicate with each other over local area networks. When Apple created AirPlay, it basically set up a new way for Apple TV to interact with iOS using Bonjour communications.

This little tweak could also work on Windows, at least in theory, and I hope that a developer will find a way to port it to the most used system on the planet because it will give us the opportunity to use almost any laptop/desktop for watch movies on your iDevices. Until then, you can test AirPlayer on your Mac after downloading the app here.

AirPlayer only works on Mac so you don't have to jailbreak your device to use it, basically you don't have to do anything else except to open it and run it on Mac.
