Qualcomm announces the first 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon processors

Today Qualcomm officially announced that this year it will launch a new series a processors which are found in millions of smartphones around the world. The new line will bring single/dual/quad-core processors capable of running at a frequency of 2.5Ghz individually. At the moment, the fastest processor announced for a smartphone is the one in the HP pre 3, which has 1.4 Ghz, but there we are talking about a single-core processor. The new processors will be made on 28nm technology, they have the code name Krait and will include: GPS, NFC, BlueTooth, FM radio, Wi-Fi, support for recording/running 3D video content as well as photo capture, and support for standards LTE.

Qualcomm claims that the new processors are approximately 150% faster than the current generation and consume 65% less energy than any of the current ARM processors. The new processors will also include an Adreno 320 GPU graphics chip in which up to 4 cores can be activated, so extraordinarily high graphics power for mobile terminals. The dual-core versions of the new processors should be available this year, with the single-core and quad-core versions being released in 2012. Unfortunately, Apple will not implement such a thing in iDevices because the company uses ARM processors.
