Here's how much an application user is worth to a developer

The mobclix company did a study in which it tried to show how much an application user is worth to the respective application developers. Those from moblix they focused on 3 categories of applications: utilities, games and entertainment from the AppStore and Android Marketplace. For the calculations, applications with over 500.000 downloads or over 75.000 daily users were used, the applications being listed for approximately 2 weeks in the top of the most downloaded applications, all being free. Mobclix calculated the number of unique users per month of these applications and the value of each one was calculated according to the revenues recorded from the advertisement.

Our January infographic in the Mobclix Index series takes a look at the value of an app user. We have all seen the research and impressive numbers around app success in 2010, but how does this translate to revenue potential for developers on a per user basis? We analyzed apps in the Utilities, Entertainment and Games categories across iPhone and Android (based on specific criteria, see below) and have found a monthly value based on ARPU (average revenue per user).

The results are not at all surprising, at least not to me. iPhone users are "worth" more to application developers than Android terminal users. In every category, iOS has surpassed Android and this is a clear indicator of how much money developers of applications for iOS and implicitly Apple earn. In the end, applications from the Utilities category generate the most money for application developers, so if you are "thinking" to start making applications, orient yourself towards the respective category.
