Tutorial: How to solve problems with error 1013 during a restore to any version of iOS

Error 1013 is strictly related to the iPhone 4 and the restore process to any version of iOS. Error 1013 appears when you want to restore to a version of iOS, but the baseband in your terminal has a lower software version than the one in the iOS you are restoring to. Normally, iTunes would update the baseband, but it is blocked, so the error 1013 saves you from updating the baseband. The error appears ONLY when you use TinyUmbrella and a SHSH or when you have iTunes redirected to saurik's servers.

There are 2 methods to solve this problem, a simple method and a slightly more complex one.

Method 1

Download TinyUmbrella from here. Open the program, in the middle of the screen you will see 3 tabs, click on Advanced. From that tab, uncheck Set hosts to Cydia on Exit and press Apply. Close TinyUmbrella, reset the computer and everything should be ok. The method works on both Windows and Mac OS X.

Method 2

There is a chance that method 1 will not work, so here are some steps that are a little more difficult but will definitely solve the problem.

Mac OS X

  1. Open the Finder and hold down the keys Command + Shift press the G key.
  2. write /private/etc/ and press Go. Look for the hosts file in that directory and copy it to the desktop.
  3. Open the hosts file with any text editor and delete the line in which you find its content gs.apple.com.
  4. Save the hosts file and copy it back to the directory /private/etc/.

Windows

Access one of the following locations depending on the version of Windows you have installed:

Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\
Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\
Windows XP, Vista, 7 c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

Open the hosts file with a text editor and delete the gs.apple.com line. There is a chance that Windows won't let you edit the file directly in the directory, so first copy it to the desktop and only then edit it. After editing, copy it back to the folder.

After you have done the operation, no matter if it is on Mac OS X or Windows, reset the computer and everything should be ok. I recommend you bookmark this article to know what to do in the future.
