iOS 5 will continue to use Google Maps as the map source for the Maps application

Now, a few days before WWDC 2011, they are starting to appear the informations which we all expected in relation to iOS 5. Although it was rumored that the new operating system will have a new Maps application that will use a proprietary Apple map system. In reality, it seems that Google Maps will also be loaded into the iOS Maps application, which will probably remain without the turn-by-turn navigation system that we all expect. Probably few people expected that Apple will now launch a new navigation system for iOS considering that it will implement a new notification system and a new widget systemi.

Now, sources have told 9to5Google that although Apple is working to improve the iOS Maps application, iOS 5 will not bring an Apple developed maps service and Google Maps is still in. Besides Apple's purchase of both Placebase and Poly9, some speculated that Apple is building their own maps service to either compete with Google or step away from their input into iOS.

Google Maps has evolved enormously in recent years and the maps from Romania are almost as well detailed and updated as the maps from iGo or Navigon, and in some cases Google Maps displays even more details than the other 2 applications. Unfortunately, the Maps application in iOS is very limited in options and it seems that iOS 5 will not change this, so we can only hope for news in iOS 6.
