Apple patents a localization system for docks, Macs and iDevices

Apple engineers are constantly innovating and according to a new patent, Apple is looking to build docks which would change the settings of our iDevices. Apple is thinking of a system that would allow Macs/iDevices to interact with Apple's docks and configure itself according to the location of the dock. For example: if we use our Mac/iDevice at home, at work, in the car, etc., then our device will be configured according to the location where we use it. If we use the iDevice in the car, when we put it in the dock, the GPS application will automatically open, and if we use the Mac at work, when we connect it to the dock, certain applications will open or the interface or settings will change.

Apple's idea could apply to any portable device, whether it be a MacBook, an iPhone or an iPad. Each docking station would, when coupled with the appropriate portable computing device, recognize its location and allow the user to operate the device accordingly. For example, an iPhone plugged into a moving car could automatically become optimized for use through voice control, as a user driving would not be able to operate the touchscreen.

The idea from Apple is very good, but I don't know how practical it will be and how confusing the whole system will be for users. The idea of having a device configured specifically for the location where we use it could cause problems and the need to change the settings if we don't always need that configuration. Of course, this patent will not be implemented in Apple products too soon, but as usual it is interesting to find out what the company is thinking.
