Augmented reality – a very useful technology for a GPS navigation application

Yesterday I was telling you about one invention patent which the Apple company has registered and which describes a possible implementation of augmented reality in the Maps application from iOS. According to this patent, Apple would introduce a series of very useful functions directly in the Maps application, so that the user would see on the screen relevant information about the location where he is and the points of interest around it. Augmented reality technology works exactly as in the picture above, that is, the application will determine your location and based on the images captured by the camera of your terminal you will have information displayed on the screen about the points of interest around you and everything based on the images you see with camera help.

In the last 2 days I have been constantly using some Romanian applications that have integrated augmented reality in addition to a GPS positioning system and I have to admit that without them I would hardly have managed in Bucharest at all. It is very easy to find a point of interest when you lift the terminal up and its location appears on the screen and you go directly to it and I think that Apple should seriously consider offering such a native system in iOS for iDevice users -hate.

For me, augmented reality is a must-have for a serious application that offers both GPS positioning information and tourist information about a city. What experiences have you had with applications that have implemented augmented reality?
