Apple could launch in March 2012 a 15-inch MacBook Air or a much thinner MacBook Pro

In the past weeks, we have seen various rumors that discussed the possible launch of a 15-inch MacBook Air or a thinner MacBook Pro. Now these rumors come back after what an Asian publication claims that Apple's partners would have components ready for a new 15-inch Mac with a design similar to that of the MacBook Air. According to the same publication, the new Macs should arrive on the market in March of next year, so it could be any of the two models considering that both were "updated" this year in approximately the same period.

Upstream suppliers of Apple have recently started shipping a small volume of components for a 15-inch ultra-thin notebook model from Apple in November and the device could be either MacBook Air or just a thinner MacBook Pro....Estimated by the product planning, mass shipments of the notebook device will start in March...While a 15-inch ultrabook model would be considered a full function machine, which consumers normally expect to have an optical drive, limitations over the thickness restriction of 0.8-inch for the ultrabook means the launch of a 15-inch machine with an optical drive and a thickness of less than 0.8-inch may not be in the plans until a later time.

In the same period next year, Intel is preparing the launch of processors built on the Ivy Bridge platform that bring 20% better performance for processing and 60% better for the video card, the comparison being of course made with the Sandy Bridge platform. In addition to better performance, the Ivy Bridge platform brings more efficient energy consumption, reducing the actual consumption by 10W so that Apple could implement the new quad-core processors in the 13-inch version of the MacBook Air. I for one think that Apple will try to produce a MacBook Pro with a design similar to that of the MacBook Air, giving up the optical drive and turning the Pro into an ultraportable laptop.
