61 million iPad 2 tablets would be as powerful as a supercomputer manufactured by Fujitsu

Fujitsu has developed the most powerful "supercomputer" in the world, a monster that is capable of calculating 10.5 billion megaflops. The "supercomputer" from Fujitsu is called K Computer and has a processing power equal to that of 61.5 million iPad 2 tablets combined. Although the processor in the iPad 2 has been compared to the supercomputer of the '70s, by today's standards it would not be more powerful than a modern desktop processor. By comparison, the iPad 2 is capable of computing 172 megaflops while an Intel Core i7 980 EX processor is capable of computing 109.000 megaflops.

The difference is enormous and puts into perspective the computing power of a dual-core processor on mobile terminals compared to one of a series processor for desktops. Of course, the Intel Core i7 980 EX has 6 cores, but even if it were dual-core, it would still "embarrass" the iPad 2 tablet, which theoretically does not even need an extraordinary amount of processing power considering that it does very well in everything he does.
