Video: Siri can be used to start and stop a car

The past days I presented you a video clip in which the personal assistant Siri was used to adjust the temperature of a thermostat. A proxy server was then used to obtain this connection between Siri and the thermostat, and the same principle is now the basis of another connection, this time between Siri and the remote control a car. Theoretically, Siri can be used to give the remote control the command to start or stop a car, all using a Wi-Fi network and a proxy server that analyzes and relays the command to Siri, and the video clip above is the best demonstration.

Yes, it really does control my car! ;) I created a new ruby plugin that is used by plamoni's "Siri Proxy", a proxy server for Apple's Siri assistant. This proxy server allows for the creation of custom plugins that can intercept recognized speech and perform virtually any function imaginable (programmable, scriptable).

The "Siri Proxy" plugin I wrote handles interaction with a php script that runs on my web server. The php script, which I developed months ago for personal use, allows me to send commands to my car which has a Viper SmartStart module installed.

For a person in a hurry, the "trick" done using Siri doesn't have much charm, but to impress friends it certainly makes sense. Basically, Apple has given us a new toy on our hands and it seems that only the imagination of the users is the limit in which Siri can work. As Apple implements new functions in its personal assistant, we will see more and more evidence of this kind, and I believe that developers will become more and more inventive.
