Tutorial: Downgrade or restore iOS 5.0.1 and 5.1 with redsn0w 0.9.11 beta 1 on iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3 (Windows, Mac)

  A few tens of minutes ago, those from Dev Team have released redsn0w 0.9.11 beta 1, a version of redsn0w that allows us to restore without using iTunes and downgrade from iOS 5.1/5.1.1 to iOS 5.0.1 or 5.1. Everything works with the help of a hack designed by the Dev Team especially for iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3, the only devices for which we could not downgrade to an iOS version for which Apple did not sign an SHSH. The rest of the iDevices released before the iPad 2 could use redsn0w to downgrade, and this tutorial does not apply to them.

  To follow this tutorial, you must have a SHSH saved for the iOS version to which you want to downgrade or restore, and if you do not have such a SHSH, then do not try the process unnecessarily because it will not work. This process updates the baseband for all devices that install the latest version of iOS, so if you have an iPhone 4S that you decode with Gevey or ultrasn0w, then DO NOT follow the tutorial. If you have an iPhone 4S decoded with SAM, then the Dev Team says you shouldn't have any problems. The Dev Team has not tested the tutorial well enough on the iPad 3 GSM, so you may not get very good results with this device.

  The tutorial applies to:

  • iPhone 4S;
  • iPad 2;
  • iPad 3.

  The tutorial only works with iOS 5.0.1/5.1, do not try to restore on iOS 4.x.

Step 1

Download from here the version of iOS to which you want to restore.

Download iOS 5.1.1 from here(or a more recent version if you are reading this tutorial after the release of iOS 5.1.2/5.2/6.0, etc)

Step 2

Downloaded redsn0w 0.9.11 beta 1 from here: WindowsMac. It's good to check the Dev Team blog for newer versions.

Step 3

Connect the terminal to PC/Mac. In Windows, go to the folder where you downloaded redsn0w, right-click on the executable, select Properties and from the newly opened menu go to Compatibility and tick Run this program in compatibility mode for then select Windows XP, Press apply, then ok and double click on the executable. On Mac just open redsn0w.

Step 4

In redsn0w go to Extract>Even More>Restore.

Step 5

Press the button ISPW and locate the ipsw downloaded in step 1. Here you will choose the IPSW of the iOS version to which you want to restore.

After you choose that ipsw you will receive the error in the image above which tells you that you must also locate the ipsw for iOS 5.1.1 (or whatever higher version there is). Press OK and locate the ipsw.

Step 6

After you receive the warning message regarding the baseband update, your terminal should automatically enter DFU Mode. If it does not enter DFU Mode automatically, then follow the steps below to enter it manually:

  • hold down the power button for 3 seconds;
  • without letting go of the power button, press the Home button for 10 seconds;
  • after the 10 seconds pass, release the Power button and the phone should already be in DFU Mode

Step 7

After you have entered the terminal in DFU Mode, you will see that the Local and Remote buttons can be accessed. The Local button allows you to upload an SHSH from your computer to redsn0w, and the Remote button allows you to force redsn0w to automatically download SHSHs from Cydia.

At this step I recommend you to use the Remote function because it will automatically take over the SHSHs and you don't have to do anything at all.

  After pressing the Remote button redsn0w will take the SHSHs and start restoring your iDevice. First it will restore to iOS 5.1.1 (or whatever new version there is) and only then will it restore to the version you need. The process will take between 10-30 minutes and during all this time you just have to let redsn0w do its job.

  After redsn0w finishes restoring, you will have the device with the software you want and you can jailbreak it by following one of the tutorials available here.
