Apple is preparing the launch of the AirPlay Direct function that will allow us to stream audio directly to accessories

Air Play Direct is the name given by those from The Telegraph a very interesting function that could allow our iDevices to stream audio directly to accessories without the need to use a third-party Wi-Fi network. AirPlay now works as follows: the iDevice and compatible accessory connect to a Wi-Fi network, and users can use that network to stream audio to the accessory. AirPlay Direct will allow iDevice owners to create a Wi-Fi network on their own terminal, just like in the case of Personal HotSpot, the accessory would connect to that network and we could stream quietly without external help.

Sources familiar with the iPhone-maker's plans said that Apple wants to improve the AirPlay wireless music streaming technology, which currently requires Airplay speakers and a WiFi network. The new version will require just speakers or a hifi and an iDevice; the iPhone, iPod or iPad would form its own network to allow a direct connection and music playback. Sources said that Apple has not signed off any specific products yet and that the 'Airplay Direct' is a working title rather than a definite name.

Those from Telegraph are the first to present this rumor and they motivate the implementation of the function by saying that changing the dock (the 8/9 pin connector port) will make many audio accessories incompatible with our iDevices. AirPlay Direct would allow users to continue using AirPlay accessories even if the iDevice's dock is no longer compatible with that of the accessory, but there is a possibility that some accessories may need a software update to work.
