Could Google Maps return in iOS 6 if Apple publishes it in the App Store?

In recent months it was rumored that Google would publish a version of Google Maps in the App Store that would work like the application available in iOS 5, and those from The Guardian reaffirms this rumor. They claim that a version of Google Maps for iOS 6 had already been sent to Apple, the company from Cupertino only having to accept the application from Google in order to give us the opportunity to enjoy a free map system on all iDevices our hours.

The same sources say that Google is preparing a Google Maps app for iOS6, which will appear in time. No official statement has been made and there will inevitably be questions about whether Apple will approve it in the App Store. (Apple might not, on the basis that it "competes with existing functionality", but would invite a further backlash if it did.)

Information from The Guardian are denied by Apple through the voice of Jim Dalrymple, so theoretically there should not be any application from Google in the process of review. I don't think we will find out the truth soon because none of the companies has made any statement on this subject, but it would be great if a Google Maps application for iOS 6 existed in the App Store.
