Apple intends to develop a fingerprint reading system that will be used in a NFC payment system

Just a few months ago, Apple initiates an acquisition procedure of Authentec, a company specialized in the development of security solutions, including a fingerprint reading system. Apple has not yet completed that procedure, and now she is interested to conclude a collaboration with MicroLatch, an Australian company that develops the same type of fingerprint recognition systems. Apple would intend to use this technology in a payment system through NFC, but of course iOS could also benefit from it.

Mr Murray said the company had an agreement with the notoriously secretive Apple to develop fingerprint technology for use in near-field communications applications. Microlatch has patented fingerprint identification technology that meets banking security standards without the need for central processing or storage; a process Mr Murray described as "self-registering".

Many people expected that iPhone 5 to be able to recognize fingerprints, I don't know who gave them this idea, but we are still far from using such a system successfully in smartphones. Apple seems to be taking the first steps towards its implementation, but for now the company seems interested in offering a solution for mobile payments and not one through which we can play with iOS. Probably in a few years this type of system will be available in all mobile terminals, but for now I think that all manufacturers are looking for the most efficient solution to implement it and of course they are looking for a real utility.
