Today the company Google announced close Google Reader, a service through which users can very simply and easily follow the new information on any websites. The service has been active since 2005, and the reason for its closure is, according to Google, the reduction in the number of users who access it, but the reaction of the Internet seems to suggest something else entirely. At least it was open until now a petition to keep the service active, and those from Google have listened to the opinion of the Internet in the past, so the decision to close Google Reader could be redesigned.
We have just announced on the Official Google Blog that we will soon retire Google Reader (the actual date is July 1, 2013). We know Reader has a devoted following who will be very sad to see it go. We're sad too. There are two simple reasons for this: usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we're pouring all of our energy into fewer products. We think that kind of focus will make for a better user experience. To ensure a smooth transition, we're providing a three-month sunset period so you have sufficient time to find an alternative feed-reading solution. If you want to retain your Reader data, including subscriptions, you can do so through Google Takeout.
In the absence of Google Reader-, you can use in iOS or Mac OS X applications such as Reeder, to benefit from the same functionality, and in the case of the desktop, other services will certainly be launched. Google Reader will be closed on July 1st, and until then enough alternatives will be launched.
