Do I lose the warranty of an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch if I jailbreak?

One of the main questions found in the comments published on this blog after the launch evasi0n7 jailbreak it has to do with the warranty of iDevices and its possible cancellation in case of making a jailbreak. As you already know very well for years, the company Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), has a firm policy of refusing to provide warranty for jailbroken terminals, so if you go with one iPhone jailbroken to a Apple Store there are high chances that the guarantee will be refused. In the same vein, some stores in Romania refuse to offer a warranty for jailbroken iDevices, but this is not a rule for all retailers.

Basically, an iDevice that is presented without warranty jailbreak it will not be refused because of this, so performing a restore before taking the terminal under warranty will get rid of this refusal. Likewise, an iDevice that cannot be turned on will not be denied warranty due to a jailbreak, so from this point of view you don't have to worry. In principle, the warranty for iDevices is canceled if you have jailbroken, but this only if the person checking the terminal discovers it, so restoring a terminal before taking it under warranty will get rid of this refusal.

  1. This is exactly what I did 4 months ago in the case of an ip4s wifi not working (gray wifi and I had to restore it and I took it to the warranty and in 2 weeks they gave me a new one...

  2. I took an iPhone5 to Genius Bar and they changed it immediately and Cydia was on the first page of SB. They gave me a new one, all they asked me was to make a backup in iCloud of the old one, and on the new one I imported that backup. And there were 12 applications like Cydia or the Chinese App Store etc. on the first page.

  3. You can restore, do whatever you want, the people from apple know if you have cydia on your phone or have had it.. Apple changes your phone, there is no problem with the jailbreak on it, now it depends on not finding a papa milk to say no.
But you don't have the problem with jailbreak and Apple will always know what applications you have on your phone or have had.

  4. Apple knows that you have cydia, for example, through diagnosis and use, but as they say, they cannot identify your iPhone through this service.
By the way, has anyone tested winterboard on ios 7? I guess it doesn't work. Can someone tell me? :)))

  5. Zaone, please answer me a question, because I didn't find anything too clear about this: Currently, do Apple products purchased from the USA benefit from a warranty in Romania?

  6. @CristianN I'm telling you as clearly and truthfully as possible. The guys from Noumax told me that the warranty offered by Apple is international, but valid on continents. An iDevice purchased from Asia or the USA will not have a warranty in Europe , but only on that continent.

  7. I know I shouldn't have posted here. With which app can I watch video on TV, I mean movies, it doesn't matter if the app is €. I tried flipps and a few more, but they only play what is in the camera roll, and other than youtube x vimeo

  8. There is no way they can offer you a new terminal changed under warranty if you got your own US phone, because, first of all, the one in the US does not have 4g on the same frequencies as in Europe. Simple. If you could change your car under warranty, if you have it on gasoline, do you think they would give you a diesel?

  9. I had a problem with an iPad 2 and I had a jailbreak and before sending it for warranty I gave it a restore, and it wasn't even noticed... I mean, I did it and sent it back to me. I had a normal warranty from e*ag

  10. @cristianN & Vlad Cristi: I bought a mbpro from amazon; arrived in Romania on the Hawaii-Afghanistan-Romania branch; I bought an adapter from thunderbolt to hdmi from iStyle United Nations which did not work and I went with the adapter and the mac to the service; they checked everything that could be checked, they specified that I benefit from an international guarantee for one year, although I did not have any purchase document or guarantee certificate, I gave them up in order not to pay VAT
so the answer to the question is that you will benefit from the international guarantee for one year, even if the Romanian legislation in force provides for two years; you buy cheaper but you also assume something 🙂

  11. I don't want to argue with anyone, but I speak from my own experience... iPhone 5 purchased in the USA, I exchanged it under warranty in England! It really lasted a week, not on the spot like in the case of the models purchased from Europe!

  12. Silviu2, I know that after resetting it appears like a phone that has just left the store, that is, only with the factory settings

  13. I am employed by Apple Care and through the diagnosis we cannot see if the phone has a jailbreak. Instead, you can see some other information about the phone. The phone in general can be sent for service with a jailbreak and no one will refuse the warranty for this reason. It could also change phones with error 1015 when restoring, which only appears because of the jailbreak with unlock and can lead to hardware problems.

  14. @zaone: I don't think he changed his policy (or maybe it was different before) but I know for sure that I sent the phone for repair with error 1015 to restore which is sure because of a jailbreak and the customer's phone was changed. From Apple Care, we carry out the repairs and the phones are sent to the German-speaking area (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) in the Netherlands for repair. And if the repair is refused, the people there refuse it, not the Apple Care employees. And if they didn't refuse the phone with error 1015 when restoring, I don't think there are problems with the warranty. In the Apple Retail Store, the employee there might refuse it, but I don't think so. Someone wrote above that they changed it even if they had cydia on the homescreen.
I don't think Orange in Romania is good at something like this, for example. Having a wide range of phones that they send for service, they are not specialized in iPhone.
I can't say it's 100% but I don't think there are any problems. I will soon take my iPhone to the Apple Store in Dresden and write an update.

  15. @zaone: I can say this: At Apple, it is not the decision of the Apple employee with whom you have contact whether to send it to you for service or not. You, as a customer, if you tell him that you want service, he must repair it for you. If you are under warranty it is free, if you are out of warranty it costs and there are standard prices for out-of-warranty repairs or devices with a broken display or problems that are not covered by the warranty (fell on the floor or has contact with liquids of any kind ).
The iPhone is taken by fast courier from the customer and goes to service. Now the service employees decide if the phone is repaired, completely changed or if the repair is refused.
I sent in the service device with error 1015 when restoring (an error that only appears because of a jailbreak usually, or when trying to downgrade). And the device was changed. So I don't see why there would be problems.

It's different in the Apple Store. You need a reservation and at the genius bar an employee decides what happens with the phone. He could theoretically refuse your repair. But I don't think he will. Someone wrote above that he changed the jailbroken phone in the Apple Store.
As information: In the official Apple Store (not istyle or any premium reseller), such as the one in Munich in the center ( http://www.apple.com/de/retail/rosenstrasse/ ) the phone can be changed on the spot in 10 minutes and it doesn't matter where it was bought. If it is during the first year it is free, if it is after the first year it costs. For example. iPhone 4 – 160,9 euros, 4S-210 euros, 5,5c,5s-> 261.1 euros – the same prices for iPhones under warranty that have been in contact with liquids or fallen on the floor.

Usually no kind of repair is refused. Either it costs or it's free.
The only time when the repair can be refused is when the phone has been opened (it has a display from ebay or a home button changed at the corner of the street) -> even then the phone can be changed but the price is as high as that of a new phone. So it is better to buy a new phone than to pay so much money.

And it should be noted that the phones you receive in exchange are not new, they are refurbished. But you can't see any kind of difference. I also have a refurbished one and when it arrived it looked exactly like new.

  16. @cristianN: Phones purchased in America benefit from an international warranty up to the iPhone 4S. From iPhone 5 and up, you cannot do service in Europe for that the hardware is different with the LTE device.

  17. @zaone: let's put it this way, the only reason why you are denied service or warranty would be because Apple (not orange or istyle or resellers) that the phone has been opened and/or parts have been changed inside (for example the home button on the occasion mounted on the corner of the street). Otherwise, Apple employees must repair it if you ask for it.
In the Apple Store (official - not istyle-> this is a premium reseller) the employee there decides, but I don't think he will refuse your warranty. If you are under warranty, the service is free, if you are out of warranty, the service costs and there are standard prices: iPhone 4-160 euros, 4s-210,9 iPhone 5,5c,5s 260,1 euros. These prices are also valid if you have a phone that has fallen on the floor, for example, or has contact with liquids. The only time the service is refused is when the phone was opened

  18. @zaone: apple doesn't support you with the jailbreak, but it doesn't deny you the repair because of it. I can't give my opinion in exchange for orange or resellers from Romania. As far as I know, the only authorized apple service in Romania is in Bucharest

  19. @zaone: I received an error when posting and I wrote several times and now I see that all the answers have been posted. 😐
I'm not contradicting you, but I can't refuse a customer's warranty just because he has a jailbreak, for example.
Anyway, I don't think it would be wrong to do a forced restore from DFU mode before taking it to service and then there are no problems of any kind. 🙂
