iMods – a Cydia alternative that could divide the jailbreak community

imods is the name of a project initiated just a few months ago, it was conceived with the idea of offering an alternative for the application Cydia users who do jailbreak. The project was conceived by students of a US university, its purpose being to convince users who don't jailbreak that it brings a multitude of benefits, and in essence we are talking about a rebranding of the jailbreak as a simple and useful procedure even for those who do not do it.

Although it is, exactly as it is Cydia, a store of tweaks and applications that can be installed via jailbreak, imods will be distributed as a separate jailbreak solution after a solution of jailbreak for iOS 8 will be released. Practically, the students will take over the solution of jailbreak for iOS 8 and they will modify it to allow the installation of iMods instead of Cydia, giving users access to all its packages.

Unlike Cydia, iMods will not allow access to repos with tweaks and applications, as Saurik's application does, but will require developers to distribute their packages exclusively through it. This means that iMods will try to separate the developer community into two segments, one that will continue to publish tweaks and applications in Cydia, and another that will be dedicated exclusively to iMods.

The appearance of this iMods forced saurik to write uin an article dedicated to the community and the competition regarding the jailbreak, and so far this new system does not seem to bring anything really useful for us. Although it is very unlikely that iMods will succeed in convincing major developers to give up Cydia for it, exclusivity and a possible improvement in the methods of preventing package piracy could be the solution.

Until then, iMods will only be released towards the end of the year and we will see then how things will evolve.
