Apple bought an American start-up to create the Explore section of the App Store

App Store Explore

Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), implemented last year in the application App Store a new section called Explore, through it the company offers us the opportunity to discover the most popular applications of the App Store from various categories or subcategories, and in the image above you have an example of how it works. To be able to offer such an option for the App Store, the Apple company acquired in 2013 a start-up called Octocat, this being specialized in the development of the system that we now use in the App Store, Apple implementing it almost entirely in the application and the store after taking over the company.

Octocat was intended as a service designed to help users discover lesser-known App Store apps rather than popular ones, so its search algorithms promote apps that don't always appear at the top of searches and wouldn't normally be discovered by to users looking for new titles. Apple did not mention the acquisition of Ottocat in any conference or press release, but the influence of the system developed by the company is fully felt in the App Store application that we use daily on our iDevices.
