Apple buys Metaio, specialized in augmented reality

Apple Metaio virtual realityLast night, Apple announced the acquisition of the company Metaio, which specializes in augmented reality, already having a series of applications that offer this technology for use by owners of iDevices or Android terminals. Metaio is a German company and according to the documentation submitted to the local government, Apple is listed as its buyer, so it is confirmed without a doubt that Apple will develop products based on augmented reality.

Metaio has a wide range of services that offer the possibility of implementing an augmented reality module in applications for mobile terminals, the company already having a number of clients who used its products. Based on the acquisition made by Apple, Metaio's services will be suspended, all its services and the entire patent portfolio becoming Apple's property.

The other day I told you that Apple is developing a service called Proactive through which it intends to implement an augmented reality system for Apple Maps, all of which could be available even from iOS 9. Considering the acquisition of Metaio, it is as clear as possible that Apple is interested in augmented reality, but it remains to be seen if this technology will be available in iOS 9 or later.

Augmented reality has not really attracted so many users, despite the obvious benefits, but the implementation in Apple Maps will certainly draw attention to the technology, as it usually happens with everything Apple offers. Those from Cupertino have not yet confirmed the purchase of Metaio, but they will probably do so in the following days.
