Apple is developing micro-LED screens

Apple ecran micro-LEDYesterday I told you that Apple has rented a laboratory in Taiwan to develop screens dedicated to its future iDevices, the American company having its own team of engineers working on the future technologies that will reach its terminals.

For now, it is not known 100% for sure what exactly he is developing Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), there, but a rumor appeared today suggests that Apple would develop micro-LED screens in this laboratory in Taiwan, they may be used in iPhone 7S, or at the latest in iPhone 8.

The authorities in Taiwan have confirmed that Apple rented that laboratory, so there are no doubts from this point of view, and the information coming today indicates that Apple would prepare screens that are thinner and consume much less energy than the current ones.

Micro-LED screens it would not require the use of lighting modules applied under the current LCD screens, they have a much better range of colors, allowing at the same time the display of images at a much higher resolution, the big problem being the possibility of production on an industrial scale.

Apple is expected to focus on developing micro-LED displays at its new facilities in Taiwan in order to create thinner and more energy-efficient products, according to Digitimes Research analyst Jessie Lin. Micro-LED displays eliminate the need for backlighting unlike traditional LCDs, and allow for improved color gamut in addition to higher resolution. However, the technology suffers from low yields when used in a TFT manufacturing process and is therefore difficult to mass produce.

Apart from the development of micro-LED technology to offer better performance than OLED, the Apple company is trying to create products that can be easily manufactured on an industrial scale, otherwise the implementation of this type of screens in iDevices will be impossible.

Considering the existing problems regarding the manufacturing of micro-LED screens on an industrial scale, it remains to be seen when Apple will decide to use this type of screens in iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches sold worldwide, or maybe even in Macs.

It has been speculated that Apple will launch a iPhone with OLED screen at the latest during 2018, but it seems that in reality we are talking about micro-LED technology and not OLED.
