Half of Romanians have internet of at least 100 Mbps

In Romania there are 4.3 million fixed internet connections, half with speeds of at least 100 Mbps

Today, ANCOM published the statistics regarding the situation of fixed internet and fixed telephony at the end of 2015 in Romania, and our country surprisingly has many Romanians with very fast internet connections, and this is based on the low prices charged by the operators .

According to those from ANCOM, in Romania there were 4.3 million fixed internet connections at the end of 2015and half of them were at least 100 Mbps, so Romanians benefit from good internet browsing or data transfer speeds.

In 2015, Romanians achieved data traffic of 4.5 million TB, average traffic per user being 91 GB per month, the figure being small, so most of those who have internet do not use it for more than simple browsing, watching YouTube clips, etc.

Regarding landline telephony, the number of connections decreased by 6% to 4.27 million, the average duration of a call made using a finx phone being just over 3 minutes, a sign that Romanians prefer to use mobile phones.

You can find more details in the ANCOM press release below.

the state of the internet in Romania

At the end of 2015, Internet users in Romania had 300 more broadband Internet connections to fixed points compared to the end of 2014, mainly connections that allow higher transfer speeds. Of the 4,3 million fixed point broadband connections in Romania, more than half allow speeds of over 100Mbps, according to ANCOM's statistical data report.
The evolution of fixed internet
Total number of broadband connections to fixed points reached 4,3 million at the end of 2015, up 6,1% compared to the same period in 2014. Through these connections, users achieved a total trafficof 4,5 million TB, while the average monthly consumption per user reached 91 GB.
Of the total broadband connections to fixed points, 52% are enabling connections Knights of at least 100Mbps, which makes Romania in the European top in terms of the share of very high-speed connections in the total number of connections. 14% are connections that also allow high speeds, between 30Mbps and 100Mbps, 20% are connections with speeds of at least 10Mbps and lower than 30Mbps, 13% are connections with speeds of at least 2Mbps, but lower than 10Mbps, the rest below 1% being connections with speeds below 2Mbps. Also, at the level of residential environments, there is a greater increase in the number of connections installed in the rural environment, by +6,8% (up to 1,17 million connections), compared to the increase of those in the urban environment by + 5,9% (up to 3,1 million connections).
Regarding access infrastructure to end users, at the end of 2015 constant increases are noted in the case of FTTH connections, which reached the level of 428 thousand (+196%) and of connections via radio, satellite, mobile networks, which increased up to 144 thousand (+151%) . At the same time, as a natural consequence of the modernization of fiber optic networks and operators' investments in new technologies, xDSL connections and those using FTTx technologies with end-user access via UTP/FTP cable decrease by more than 5%, but they continue to hold the largest share in the total number of broadband Internet access connections – FTTx connections with UTP/FTP cable access – 50%, respectively those via xDSL – 23%.
The evolution of fixed telephony
The use of fixed telephony continued to decrease throughout 2015, with decreases both at the level the number of access lines (-6%, up to 4,27 million) and, respectively, at the level number of subscribers (-6%, up to 3,71 million), as well as the level of traffic achieved by them. On December 31, 2015, the fixed telephony penetration rate per 100 inhabitants was 21,5%, and the fixed telephony penetration rate per 100 households was 46,5%.
Total voice traffic made through fixed networks reached 3,8 billion minutes in 2015, down 16% annually. All categories of voice traffic recorded decreases: traffic to fixed public networks decreased by 18% to 2,5 billion minutes, traffic to mobile public networks decreased by 14% to 1 billion minutes, respectively traffic international decreased by 11% to 286 million minutes.
In 2015, the monthly average of traffic originating from an access line was 1 hour and 12 minutes, 10 minutes less than the average value in 2014, with a call having an average duration of 3 minutes and 6 seconds .
The statistical data report on the electronic communications market in Romania for the second semester of 2015 is produced by ANCOM based on the data reported by the active providers of electronic communications services that carried out commercial activities between July 1 and December 31, 2015 and will be available in soon on www.ancom.org.ro.
