The App Store could have 5 million applications in 2020

The current number of App Store applications could double by 2020, an American company estimating that Apple could host at that point no less than 5 million applications for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple Watch and Apple TV 4, the figure being a colossal one, if we think about where it all started.

According to those from SensorTower, at the end of 2015 there were 1.75 million applications in the App Store, the figure will increase to 2.93 million applications, that is, we are talking about an increase of 1.18 million units, greater than in any other period recorded until present for the Americans store.

Even so, the current number of App Store applications makes it almost impossible to discover new and good titles that appear daily in the store, so in 2020 Apple will have a much bigger problem with its applications, but probably the recently announced system of promotion of applications will have its role well defined.

As discoverability continues to be a major hurdle for many app developers, new Sensor Tower research projects that Apple’s App Store will be home to more than five million active apps by the end of 2020, a catalog 73 percent larger than we project it will have at the end of 2016. In this report, we’ll present what this growth looks like over the next four years, and break down the categories adding the most new apps by month.
