Apple is in advanced negotiations with Sharp for the purchase of OLED screens to be used in the iPhone 8, which will be released on the market next year. Those from Apple use OLED screens for the Apple Watch at the moment, but next year they intend to implement them including in the iPhone, starting with the iPhone 8.
OLED screens have a much better contrast ratio than LCD screens and do not need lighting, each individual pixel lighting up by itself, so that during the display of black color the pixels close and do not emit light. OLED screens also consume much less energy when displaying a black interface, and the Apple Watch uses tricks like this to extend battery life.
The possible agreement between Apple and Sharp regarding the purchase of OLED screens also depends on the ability of those from Sharp to manufacture enough components for the needs of Americans. In this idea, it remains to be seen what percentage of the total required by Apple will actually be bought from Sharp, or from other manufacturers.
iPhone 8 – Apple buys OLED screens from Sharp
Sharp had announced this week that it will invest 566 million dollars in increasing the production of OLED screens until the middle of 2018, but Apple needs screens from next year. Those from Sharp are investing in the Mie and Osaka factories, the amount being an impressive one for the company that has debts of over 3 billion dollars.
Sharp is one of Apple's traditional partners for the screens used in iDevices, and with the iPhone 8 this long collaboration could continue in approximately the same parameters. Of course, everything depends on how Sharp will develop its production capacity, but the first signs are quite good, especially since it has Foxconn behind it.
Having said that, here we have more and more confirmations of the fact that the iPhone 8 will indeed have an OLED screen.
