iPhone 8 – Apple patents the new Touch ID

The new Touch ID of the iPhone 8 is described in detail in a patent registered today to Apple.

iPhone 8 will be launched next year by the Apple company, and until then we will most likely find out all the important news related to the future Apple smartphone. For starters, those from Cupertino have registered a patent detailing how they will implement the Touch ID fingerprint reader under the iPhone 8 screen.

Apple is talking about a capacitive fingerprint reader that would use an electrostatic lens to be able to detect and read the user's fingerprint before authorizing access to the terminal. Although the iPhone 7 has a 3D Touch Home button, the iPhone 8 will not have a Home button, but will have a front panel that is completely covered by the device's screen.

In this idea, the iPhone 8 will use electrostatic lenses to read our fingerprints, Apple explaining that these are basically conductive layers that have a certain pattern. Depending on the position, shape and the electric current passing through them, these layers can change their flow around a user's finger to allow the fingerprint to be read.

Apple also describes a very complex method by which the modification of the current flow and the mapping of certain points of a finger can allow it to read the user's fingerprint. I know the technology is different from the ultrasonic one used in the current Xiaomi terminals, but for now it is not known 100% for sure what the Apple company will use.

"A capacitive fingerprint sensor, comprising: a dielectric structure having a contact surface and a sensor surface; an array of capacitive sensing elements held on or near the sensor surface of the dielectric structure; and an electrostatic lens formed within the dielectric structure."

Considering that the iPhone 8 will be released next year, Apple could choose another technology to make its terminal with a screen that covers its entire front surface. Regardless of the situation, it is very clear that Apple wants to completely eliminate the upper/lower edges of the front panel and offer a screen on the entire surface of the device.
