AirPods were launched by the Apple company a little over a week before Christmas for those interested in buying them, and now you can buy them including in Romania from this page. Although the first information on sales of AirPods headphones suggested that they represented 26% of online sales of Bluetooth headphones, the reality would still be much different.
According to the NPD Group, AirPods accounted for only 2% of Bluetooth headphone sales in December, with revenue generated by them amounting to only 3% of the total. The difference is a massive one between the information offered by Slice, initially, and NPD Group now, and they are based on the way in which the sales of Bluetooth headphones were analyzed.
While Slice analyzed the emails of 4.2 million people who shop online, the NPD Group also took into account sales made in physical stores. Moreover, NPD monitored the entire month of December, while Slice presented the situation only for December 13-31, so the half of the month without AirPods was not taken into account.
AirPods had disappointing Christmas sales
In light of this new information, NPD says that Beats is the clear leader in the wireless headphone market, having 25% of the entire market during December. With AirPods, Apple managed to match only Planctronics in sales, so it is not in the last place in the sales list, but on the other hand, it does not occupy a very good position either.
The low market share and low sales could also be based on the fact that AirPods were available in extremely limited quantities for customers. The orders placed now are only delivered in February by the Apple company, so it is quite normal for sales to be reduced since there are no units in stores.
"Apple being able to capture 2 percent of the market in units and 3 percent in dollars with one product in its debut month is significant, given how big the headphone market is. The Bluetooth headphone market grew 51 percent over the last year (in dollars) so the fact that Beats was able to maintain share and its position in the market means its sales grew as fast as the market did."
However, I don't think that when the stocks increase, Apple will sell much more AirPods headphones, considering the high purchase price.
