Facebook - this is how much data the Romanian authorities have requested

Last year, Facebook received quite a few requests from the Romanian authorities to disclose data on the accounts used by Romanians accessing its platform. Yesterday, Facebook made public the information regarding the data requested and received by the Romanian authorities regarding users from our country who use the social network.

According to those from Facebook, throughout 2016, Romanian authorities made 61 requests regarding the provision of data for 107 Facebook accounts. Apart from these, 3 more urgent requests were made for 11 accounts owned by the Facebook company, the authorities also requesting the preservation of the data of several dozen accounts in the network.

The requests made by the Romanian authorities to Facebook are related to ongoing criminal investigations, and in approximately a little over half of the cases the company had data to provide. Those from Facebook claim that they provide data to the authorities only in cases where they receive official requests that are accompanied by documents that support the reasons for disclosing the data.

The number of requests made by the Romanian authorities to Facebook for the disclosure of user data is quite small, compared to the total number of people who use the network. Even so, although the authorities request data, Facebook discloses only what it has, and in many cases it seems that these requests were in vain.
