Telekom presented the first 5G network for Romania

Telekom made the first demonstration of a 5G network in Southeast Europe together with Ericsson, which will provide the equipment for it.

Telekom presented during this day the first demonstration of a 5G network in South-Eastern Europe, Ericosson being the partner chosen by the operator to show the capacity of the network. We are talking about speeds of 24 Gbps achieved by Telekom in the tests carried out for the future 5G network, it being built on the basis of the equipment provided by those from Ericsson.

The 5G technology presented by Telekom together with those from Ericsson will be officially available only in 2020, so until then we will have a lot to wait for. However, the wait will be worth it, because the 5G network will bring very high speeds for surfing the Internet, but also lower battery consumption for mobile terminals, or at least that's what Telekom and Ericsson promise.

The speed achieved by Telekom in the 5G network built by Ericsson has aggregate speeds over 60 times higher than the highest commercial 4G speed today. In Romania, 4G networks with speeds up to 300 Mbps are officially available in many cities, and in Bucharest there is also support for 450 Mbps, including at Telekom, but nothing more.

Telekom says that by 2022 in Europe there should be 5G coverage for approximately 10% of the population, but also 550 million active subscriptions. Of course, here we are talking about a Telekom forecast that will probably not happen in reality, considering that the first commercial 5G networks will only be launched in 2020.

However, the 5G technology demonstrated by Telekom and Ericsson would be based on a new idea of combining antennas, so theoretically we are talking about a proprietary solution. Considering today's presentation, those from Telekom and Ericsson will work closely to prepare this 5G network in Romania, so it will be interesting to see what they will manage to do.

"5G technology is eagerly awaited not only here, locally, but also at the Group level. In addition to its superior attributes, more important is the fact that this technology will create a change in mentality at the level of the entire society and open the door to new possibilities suitable for the needs of our customers, both in everyday life and in the office. High speed, mobility, security, smart devices all have some limitations today, but 5G will offer new perspectives and solutions to these current challenges. We are testing this technology now, before its commercial launch, because when the time comes we want to be ready to offer all these new experiences to our customers so that they, in turn, can fully benefit from this technology when timely"

The idea of those from Telekom is very interesting and worthy of all the praise, but what happens with the current services and with the weak 4G network they have? How will Telekom make the transition to a new 5G network by 2020 if it was not able to build its current 4G network in Romania? The answer to this question will not come even after the 5G network is launched.
