Apple develops batteries for electric cars

Apple is collaborating with a Chinese company called Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited to develop batteries for electric cars. Apple and Amperex have secretly signed a partnership through which they will offer each other technologies for the development of batteries dedicated to electric cars, although those from Apple do not sell cars, but plan to launch a car at some point.

Apple already buys from Amperex the vast majority of batteries that are used in its products, of various types, so we are talking about a long collaboration between the companies. Despite the long collaboration between Apple and Amperex, none of the companies have publicly acknowledged any contract for the supply of batteries dedicated to the products sold by those from Cupertino worldwide.

Apple chose Amperex, probably because the latter has more than 3700 engineers who work on the development of batteries in various universities and laboratories around the world. Practically, Amperex has the ability to develop the batteries that Apple needs, but the Americans also have technologies that could be helpful in developing batteries for electric cars that have better life and capacity.

Apple is already testing self-driving cars in the US and unfortunately today's information is only limited to the announcement of collaboration in the field of batteries for electric cars. Since Apple is testing autonomous cars, it is easy to understand why its interest could also extend to electric cars, which are becoming more and more popular thanks to Tesla, many car manufacturers having models on the market.

"Apple may become a car maker. The company is secretly working with a Chinese battery manufacturer on automotive battery research and development, which indicates that the firm's car project involves not only software but also hardware."
