iPhone X it finally arrived at iDevice.ro and I had the opportunity to use the phone before sharing my first impressions about it, but of course this is just the beginning. The iPhone X was officially launched in Romania, and at the moment you can pre-order it here, here, or here and there are chances to find units in stock, or to be lucky enough to have a unit delivered to you faster by stores.
The OLED screen, the new design and cutout
The first thing that greets you with the new iPhone X is the design changed by Apple, an OLED screen dominating the front panel, until you reach the cutout on the top. Holding the phone in my hand, I still think that the iPhone X has an ugly cutout, but the thick side edges are not something to praise either, but overall, the phone looks better than in the pictures, so I recommend you go and use it through the stores that exhibited it.
The side edges of the iPhone X case are, in the case of the model I chose, painted in a color that in strong light looks like space gray, but otherwise resembles a glossy black. I have to admit that Apple deserves full praise here, because compared to iPhone 7 or iPhone 8, the phone has a premium look, as a phone that costs so much money should have, regardless of who made it.
The glass case of the iPhone X blends perfectly with the stainless steel structure and the phone looks, from my point of view, much better than the iPhone 8 space gray, or than the silver version of the iPhone X. If you had a jet black iPhone 7 before , then the space gray version of the iPhone X is the closest to what Apple launched last year, even if we are talking about a dark gray for the case, not black.
The OLED screen of the iPhone X impresses with its size in relation to the case, but unfortunately, it changes color a lot depending on the angle from which you look at it. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to capture this in the pictures, but the screen changes its shades between warm and cold if you move your head just a little up or down while looking at it, and I haven't seen something like this on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and it's very strange on iPhone X.
Apart from this strange display of colors on the iPhone X screen depending on the angle of use, the OLED screen displays vibrant colors and has a good brightness, so I hope I can get used to the color changes.
Face ID - simple and easy facial recognition
Face ID is the second big key point of the iPhone X, the facial recognition system replacing Touch ID for biometric security, and the change is an extremely good one. Face ID is set in a few seconds, much faster than Touch ID, and from that point you don't have to worry about it, because unlocking is done almost immediately, without errors, for now, but not as fast as Touch ID, but I can live with that.
From setting Face ID to writing the article, I have done several dozen unlocks, all without any failure, all as simple as you have seen at Apple. Authorization is done immediately for downloading applications or accessing menus, without touching the screen and without doing anything else, here Face ID is faster than Touch ID, which I have already seen in several videos.
All in all, I like Face ID and I wouldn't want to go back to Touch ID, for now.
The new cameras and performances
iPhone X amazed me in the first unboxings with the performance it had, and in real life the situation is preserved, to a certain extent. It is true that the iPhone X works very fast, but when you start accessing Animoji, or other complex functions, you will see slight blockages, so the phone is not quite so perfect, even if it works very fast, even better than the iPhone 8.
The TrueDepth camera does an excellent job for facial recognition, and selfies with the Portrait function are something girls will love, and that's because we're talking about superior functionality compared to standard photo-taking functions. Tracking the movements of the face for facial recognition is done quite well, with some blockages or moments when the phone seems to lag behind, but it all depends on how you use it.
The main camera does not seem to me to be much better than the one in the iPhone 8, but I did not have much time to test it, so I will return here with information in the following days.
Gestures and Animoji
Gestures? Thanks Apple. I thought it would be hard to get used to using the new gesture system of the iPhone X without a Home button, but I have to admit that I wouldn't want to go back to a phone with a Home button. Gestures are so easy to use, both for switching between applications, or for accessing the task switcher, that I think anyone will get used to them very quickly.
Animoji are an interesting trick for the iPhone X, something you will play with a little after you buy it, but you will most likely forget this function because its usefulness is reduced. Animoji does not work 100% smoothly, I encountered blockages in the recording, or in tracking the movements of the face, but it was expected that there would be something like that, because nothing is perfect, not even a 5400 LEI phone.
iPhone X is a phone that, to be completely honest, attracts you, because it offers a different visual experience and a different experience for use, the Apple company giving us a lot to work with. Yes, iPhone X does not seem to be perfect, yes iPhone X will force us to get used to some new things, but I think that a lot of people will be satisfied with it, will appreciate it and will not want to let it go .
