iPhone X and Face ID a Week Later

iPhone X and my experience with Face ID after a week of use in which I used facial recognition in a variety of common situations.

After a week of using the iPhone X and Face ID, I made a clearer opinion about the facial recognition system that the Apple company implemented in its new mobile phone. Last week I told you that Face ID in iPhone X is almost perfect, the facial recognition system working without problems every time my face appears in front of the TrueDepth camera on the front panel.

iPhone X continues to unlock very well with Face ID, there were still small inconsistencies, but the experience is without a doubt better than when using Touch ID on the old iPhone models. Face recognition is done to a greater extent in Face ID compared to Touch ID, and at night there is not the slightest problem because there is not enough darkness to prevent recognition.

Face ID does not work if you hold the iPhone X too far from your face, nor if you hold it at too sharp an angle in relation to your face, i.e. at the level of your pants pocket when you take it out to see the notifications. Face ID does not work even if the phone is placed flat on the table next to you, it has to be slightly tilted to do the unlocking, despite all the tricks that exist on the internet, placing it in a dock solves the problem.

Although the Face ID function that allows you to hide notifications until you look at the phone and unlock it seems like a good idea, in reality, if you get a lot of notifications when you have the phone on the table, it becomes tiring. At some point, after about 2-3 days, I got tired of unlocking iPhone X every time I received a notification, so I disabled the special functions that are based on attention.

Another problem I encountered with Face ID is related to the fact that sometimes unlocking does not activate automatically if you pick up the phone and do not immediately look at the screen for the system to recognize you. In some cases, a lock and unlock is needed for Face ID to recognize you, and I don't know if the system should work like that, or if this is a bug of the iPhone X that will be fixed.

It doesn't matter how many fingerprints you collect on the TrueDepth camera, because Face ID will do the unlocking without any problems, so from this point of view you don't have to worry. Overall, I'm happy with Face ID and what Apple managed to do for the iPhone X, I don't want to ever go back to Touch ID, but of course there are improvements that can be made for Apple's facial recognition.
