Windows has from this weekend an emergency patch available from Microsoft for those who have Intel processors and have installed the Specter and Meltdown patches. I told you last week that Intel warns customers about random restarts due to patches for its problems, and Microsoft has solved them in a way.

Microsoft has released a special downloadable patch for the Windows operating system available here and which prevents the problems generated by the previous patches. Intel advised people not to install the first patches for the Meltdown and Specter vulnerabilities, and now Windows has an additional measure of protection.

The new emergency patch is available for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 operating systems, the installation preventing random restarts and data loss from computers. This emergency patch is mandatory for all those who have installed previous versions, so if you have Windows it is mandatory to install it right now.

"Microsoft has been forced to issue a second out-of-band security update this month, to deal with the issues surrounding Intel's Specter firmware updates. Microsoft has issued the update as part of its Windows Update catalog, which means you'll need to download it manually for now. It's worth applying it to systems that are experiencing the issues since Intel's buggy firmware updates.:

Windows will not display this patch among those available through the update system accessible through the Control Panel, so you will have to download it manually and install it. Apart from solving the problems of the main patches, the new one for Windows offers protection including for the 2nd version of Spectre, so it would be a mistake to avoid it in the future.
