Orange, one of the largest telecom operators on the Romanian market, will test, in a European first, a new 5G network multi-vendor FWA (fixed wireless access), but it will not be launched soon. Those from Orange would have scheduled this test for July 2nd, it was to take place in Floresti, near Cluj-Napoca, the equipment for the new network being provided by those from Cisco, in a partnership announced since winter.
More than a year ago, Orange announced its intentions to launch a high-speed 5G network in Romania, and as we get closer to the estimated launch date, 2020, it is normal to see the first tests. Orange also did tests for 5G networks in the past, although they were of a different type, but it obtained speeds of 1 Gbps for internet browsing in those demonstrations, so now at least a similar result is expected in Cluj.
Orange will Test a 5G Network in the European Premiere
Orange intends to invest over 100 million euros in 2018 to improve its existing infrastructure and create the basis of the future 5G network, the amount being slightly higher than that recorded in 2017. Orange is only one of the telecom operators on the Romanian market which intends to launch 5G networks in our country in 2020, and after that, but of course it takes time and massive investments to realize the plans.
Orange managed to create a very good 4G network in Romania following serious investments, and the same thing is expected for the 5G network, but for now everything is only in the development process, and nothing more. I expect that the first 5G networks from Orange will initially be launched in Bucharest, possibly Cluj and other large cities, but the national availability will not come from 2020, but in the following years, so don't expect to have it available everywhere very soon.
