Samsung announced today a completely unexpected premiere for the smartphone market, the Korean company continuing to innovate in a market in which it is a leader in the manufacture of important components. After a few years ago those from Samsung offered a premiere by launching DDR4 RAM memory modules, now the Korean company announces the development of the first DDR5 RAM memory modules dedicated to the smartphones of the future.

Samsung managed to create a DDR5 RAM memory module that is produced using a 10nm manufacturing process, which is 1.5 times faster than the LPDDR4X RAM modules used in current smartphones. More precisely, the new DDR5 RAM modules can offer data transfer speeds of up to 6500 Mbps, or 51.2GB per second, a huge difference compared to what exists now in mobile phones, those from Samsung preparing a new revolution in the matter performance.

Samsung claims that the new DDR5 RAM modules will allow offering more advanced artificial intelligence systems, will improve 4K recording, video editing and playback, but the most important thing is the 5G speeds offered. As usual, the technological advance made for DDR5 RAM modules also brings a much better energy efficiency, the voltage required for operation being lower, and the system that keeps the RAM memory in sleep mode it is 2 times more efficient than DDR4.

"Samsung today announced that it has successfully developed the industry's first 10-nanometer (nm) class* 8-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR5 DRAM. The 8Gb LPDDR5 boasts a data rate of up to 6,400 megabits per second (Mb/s), which is 1.5 times as fast as the mobile DRAM LPDDR4X, 4266Mb/s. The 10nm-class LPDDR5 DRAM will be available in two bandwidths – 6,400Mb/s at a 1.1 operating voltage (V) and 5,500Mb/s at 1.05V.”

Samsung claims that the DDR5 RAM is up to 30% more energy efficient because it works with a voltage of 1.1, while another mode of operation reduces the performance by 20%, but also the voltage to 1.05. The Samsung Galaxy S10 could be the first smartphone that could have integrated the new integrated DDR5 RAM modules, the Korean company intends to start production in 2018, so until 2019 it will have enough time to equip its phone with this major technology.
