We are talking here about the sales recorded in Europe for the iPhone XR, the phone being a few hundred euros cheaper than the iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max, so its success should not have surprised the world, but following the evolution at the end of 2018 , the success so far is surprising.
iPhone XR it was highly sought after by those who didn't buy iPhone X and either had old models of iPhone phones, or bought iPhone 8/8 Plus at the time of launch, so they stayed in roughly the same price category. iPhone XR was harshly criticized at the end of 2018 for not being able to attract enough Apple fans, but most seem to have waited for 2019 to upgrade, probably because then their contracts for subsidies for old iPhones expired .
