The Government of Romania. RADICAL decision regarding STS and 112 after the Caracal Case

The Romanian Government took a radical decision regarding the Special Telecommunications Service, STS, which also implicitly affects the activity of the emergency service 112, and everything in the context of the tragedy in Caracal. The Romanian government reduced the STS budget by 71 million LEI today, and some sources say that part of this money would have been allocated by the institution for the modernization of the 112 emergency service and the implementation of AML.

STS did not publicly declare this, but said that it will implement from its own funds the Advanced Mobile Location technology for the 112 emergency service, but the reduction of the budget by such a large amount would prevent this. Unofficially, it was said that STS ran out of money that would have gone towards the modernization of 112 in the sense of AML implementation, and if this is true, then unfortunately we might have to wait a long time for it.

STS will no longer be transferred to the administration of the MAI, as Minister Mihai Fifor declared more than a week ago, so the implementation of the AML for 112 must be done from the institution's own funds. STS has already contracted a project for this, partially done with European funds, but that was challenged in court, so it is far from being put into practice, so STS will have to find money elsewhere for the modernization of STS.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila made it clear that she would support the efforts to modernize the 112 emergency service, but probably if it was to be transferred to the administration of the MAI, because today's decision shows something to the contrary. Of course, it is possible that other funds will be allocated specifically for the implementation of AML technology for the 112 emergency service, but for now there are no details regarding a possible change in this regard.

Having said that, it remains to be seen what will happen with the modernization of the 112 emergency service, but if STS really ran out of money for the project, maybe it would be good to download the call 112 application on your phones.
