The Romanian Police will be able to apply lower fines for violating certain rules regarding traffic on public roads thanks to an amendment of the USR.

small fines Romanian police usr

Romanian police will have the possibility to apply smaller fines to cyclists who violate the rules regarding traffic on public roads thanks to an amendment of the USR to the legislation now in force. This reduction in fines also applies to holding a mobile phone when riding a bicycle, so the Romanian Police will not be obliged to apply the large fines that have been announced for more than a month now.

The Romanian Police is now obliged to fine cyclists between 870 and 1160 LEI for holding a mobile phone while driving on public roads, but also for other violations of the Highway Code. After Klaus Iohannis promulgates this amendment to the Highway Code legislation, the Romanian Police will be able to apply fines from the second class of sanctions, i.e. having values between 580 - 725 LEI.

SMALLER FINES from the Romanian Police for Romanians Thanks to USR

The Romanian Police has not specified until now how many fines it has applied to cyclists, neither for holding the phone in hand when cycling on public roads, nor for not respecting the red color of the traffic light, etc. Many cyclists do not respect traffic lights or pedestrian crossings, absolutely nothing, although they want to respect traffic, but those from the USR managed to obtain the adoption of this amendment which brings lower fines applicable by the Romanian Police.

According to the USR, the Romanian Police would be reluctant to fine cyclists, this being one of the reasons for the request to reduce the value of the fines applied to them, although the reality could be different. Regardless of the reasons why the Romanian Police do not fine too many cyclists, reducing the amount of fines will not make them change their way of working out of the blue, so the amendment will not have any major effect.

The Romanian Police will be able to apply these smaller fines after promulgation, but it could take at least a month until this happens, so nothing will change immediately.
