Telekom: The European Commission Involved in the Sale to Orange

Telekom has the sale to Orange analyzed not only by the Romanian authorities, but also by the European Commission, this is why its involvement was necessary.

Telekom European Commission

Telekom seems to greatly complicate the situation of the Romanian authorities with his plans to leave our country to become profitable again, and they have revealed what is happening now. The Competition Council is in discussions with the European Commission regarding Telekom's desire to leave Romania, and this is because the competitive environment in our country could suffer if one operator sells its operations to another, or 2 others.

Telekom already reached an agreement with Orange to sell its fixed services division in Romania, and the mobile services division could end up either with RCS & RDS or with an investment group, but for now it is not clear. The Competition Council says that it is monitoring very carefully the situation created by Telekom, and this is because it is possible that in Romania the competition on the telecommunications market will be affected by the departure of such an important group as the German one.

Telekom: The European Commission Involved in the Sale to Orange

Telekom will sell its fixed and mobile services divisions for a lot of money, so the operator, or operators, who will buy them will want to recover their money as quickly as possible, which could bring higher prices for customers. The Competition Council is working with ANCOM and the European Commission to find the best solutions to allow those from Telekom to leave Romania, but also to keep the competitive environment unchanged.

Telekom wants to leave Romania because its profit is much lower than in other countries, being forced to increase 3 times the prices in our country, and this leaves millions of customers with big question marks. Telekom is still far from leaving, especially since the Romanian Government has other priorities at the moment, and anyway it does not have the authority to approve positively or negatively such a transaction of a company that is also of strategic importance in Romania.

Telekom reached an agreement in the fall of 2019 with Orange for the sale of operations in Romania, but it could be in the winter of 2020 before this transaction could be completed.
