Klaus Iohannis: Huawei has little chance of supplying 5G equipment

Klaus Iohannis held a press conference today to discuss various topics of great interest to Romanians, and among them the 5G problem slipped in, a problem that has been waiting for a solution for a year, and will probably wait longer.

Klaus Iohannis made it clear that Huawei will not be able to supply 5G equipment for operators in Romania, without directly saying so, but his statements do not leave room for too much interpretation, even if they were no longer needed.

Klaus Iohannis signed a memorandum with Donald Trump a year ago, Romania effectively committing to block Huawei's access to the supply of 5G equipment, without saying this clearly, and the position from then remains even now.

These days, Huawei is carrying out an extensive information campaign regarding the benefits that 5G brings, as well as the use of its equipment in Romanian networks, but Klaus Iohannis makes it very clear that the chances of this happening are almost nil.

"Romania's position is exactly the position expressed in the memorandum that was signed last year when I visited President Trump. We want safe networks, networks that are not under the control of states with other interests than those declared, and we want networks that satisfy the needs of both companies and citizens in Romania.

We are working on a special legislation on this topic, in order to prevent the entry on the 5G market of some companies on which they plan certain suspicions."
