Valeriu Gheorghita sends a very firm warning to Romanians all over the country in the midst of wave 4 of infections generated by the Coronavirus, and this is because, unfortunately, in Romania the number of people who are vaccinated every day has started to drop significantly from over a week.
Valeriu Gheorghita says that in this context, Romania will not have a sufficient vaccination rate to eliminate the possibility of other waves hitting our country, so we can expect the situation from wave 4 to repeat itself in a few months, again and again, without stop.
"You have seen that in recent weeks we have been broadcasting: if the rate of vaccination of over 80.000 people per day is maintained, at the end of this year we could have exceeded the 70% vaccination rate of the eligible population over 12 years old.
It is obvious, I think, that at this moment it is impossible to achieve this goal by the end of the year, because we have a vaccination rate at the moment between 26.000-28.000 new people per day, which means that at least at this vaccination rate we have we could reach about 8,5 million vaccinated people at the end of the year.
Practically, at this moment we are at about 7,3 million people and here we are talking about vaccination with at least one dose. What does 8,5 million people mean? It means about 50% vaccination rate in the eligible population over 12 years, so basically it is insufficient to say that we have indeed achieved a high enough vaccination rate that the impact of the other pandemic waves will be limited.
Unfortunately, it will not be so, if the vaccination rate, I repeat, will not improve significantly in the next period, because the idea of group immunity is not to achieve it in the end, that is, to achieve it in 2 years, in 3 years, because, until this moment, the number of serious cases and victims, of people who lose their lives will be so high that, practically, through vaccination we can no longer say that we have avoided many deaths.
We are interested in this group immunity rate being achieved in a short time, because then it will produce the beneficial, preventive effects of avoiding deaths from COVID-19."
