Valeriu Gheorghita: Last Minute Announcement for Wave 5, Omicron Variant

Valeriu Gheorghita sends a last-minute announcement for all Romanians regarding the 5th wave and the Omicron variant, which will be its basis at the beginning of 2022, stating that we cannot trust the fact that the forms of the disease generated by this variant they will be easier.

Valeriu Gheorghita explains below that it is difficult to predict such a trend, especially in a country like Romania where there are fewer vaccinated people than in Western European countries, and if you look at Great Britain you will see that the high vaccination rate it does not protect against the uncontrolled growth of infections.

"It is difficult to say whether the coronaviruses follow the same evolutionary trend. This generally happens in an epidemic or a pandemic because people generally acquire immunity either through infection or vaccination, and then even if reinfection occurs in those who - have recovered from illness or infections in those vaccinated, obviously the impact on health is less.

As far as this virus, this Omicron variant is less virulent than Delta we will see. I repeat, from the point of view of the experts it is much too early to say that the impact on each infected person is really insignificant, because in the other countries where the spread of the Omicron variant has expanded at the moment, most people are vaccinated or passed through the disease.

It is difficult to assess the impact. In a country like Romania, which has a low vaccination rate, think over 80 years, somewhere around 25-26%, it is very difficult to predict the impact, but I don't think we need to make these assessments on our health own and we must protect ourselves, because what kills is the disease, it is COVID-19 and not the vaccination. Let's figure this out!

Of course, our priority remains to vaccinate particularly vulnerable people with the first scheme, but, taking into account that we have vulnerable vaccinated people, it is very good to complete their vaccination scheme with this booster dose precisely for optimal protection against the Omicron variant."
