Netflix announced an unprecedented decision that comes to the joy of several tens of millions of subscribers from all over Europe, and that will have a very big impact on those who follow all the content that is available to them on the platform. More specifically, Netflix announced a doubling to 500 million euros of the budget for new productions in Germany until the end of 2023, a huge increase in the amounts allocated for this country, which of course also covers Austria.
Netflix amazes with this increase, but it is an indicator for what should happen including for other countries and regions in Europe, after last year the Americans increased the budget for new productions in Great Britain to 1 billion dollars. We do not yet know what kind of changes would be made for productions in French, Spanish, or Italian, for example, but it is expected that larger allocations will be made for Netflix productions there as well.
Netflix: The RADICAL decision in Europe, what it does for subscribers
Netflix can easily allocate more sums for productions in languages that are used in several countries, and this is because that content can be seen by more people more easily, but of course it must also think about the rest of the subscribers. Focusing on the richest countries in Europe is normal, because there Netflix can convince more people with money to subscribe to its platform, but also because there is more competition there.
Netflix has never revealed what kind of budgets it grants for productions in countries like Romania, or others in Central Europe, which have languages used only on their territory, but the lack of constant, important new creations in the Romanian language is an indicator that we mattered too much. It is possible that this will change in the future, but the number of subscribers in Romania, and possibly Moldova, needs to increase to justify the investment in special productions in the Romanian language.
Netflix will continue to increase its production budgets in several areas of the globe as it manages to increase the number of subscribers, but also as the competition from HBO Max, Disney Plus, and any other streaming platforms.
