Valeriu Gheorghita: Last Minute Announcement, Lifting of Restrictions after Wave 5

Valeriu Gheorghita talks about the lifting of the restrictions after the 5th wave in Romania, the doctor explaining to the Romanians the fact that the measures that are in force at the moment will be lifted only when the situation allows it, but that he is not part of the commission that make these decisions.

Valeriu Gheorghita says that a complex analysis of the epidemiological situation in Romania is being done before a decision is made to lift certain restrictive measures or not, but for now we are not in a situation where this happens in our country.

"Sure, these measures..., I allowed myself to say a point of view from the point of view of the clinician, of the specialist in infectious diseases. I'm not necessarily involved in the decision-making group vis-à-vis such measures, but I think there are certain indicators that we don't necessarily have to look at in absolute terms.

That is to say that we have reached an incidence threshold of a certain value or a certain ratio, percentage of positive cases, but the dynamics and maintenance of this downward trend are very important; and as this downward trend is being recorded and consolidated and we see it globally, the World Health Organization has even published a report showing a significant decrease in the number of cases globally.

This is more important if you want than the absolute number of patients in hospitals or intensive care units, because we will always have a disconnect, a gap between the number of patients admitted to intensive care and the number of deaths that obviously occur afterwards.

So, from this point of view, it is an analysis that is done dynamically, and at the moment when we will also have sufficient response capacity at the level of the sanitary system, then certain restrictions can certainly be lifted, but obviously we remain with this vulnerability related to the fact that, as I said, an important percentage of vulnerable people are still not vaccinated.

From this point of view, certainly at the level of all health facilities, it is important to devise a circuit that allows the admission of patients with such pathologies who, often being elderly people, also have other associated chronic conditions."
