The first Portuguese soldiers arrive in Romania, part of NATO

Portugal sent the first soldiers to Romania as part of a detachment of 220 soldiers who will arrive in our country as part of NATO's decision to bring more military personnel to our country because of the war in Ukraine.

"Portuguese soldiers in Romania.

A detachment of approximately 220 soldiers from the Portuguese Republic will be deployed in phases, in the second decade of April, in Romania, as part of NATO's measures to strengthen the eastern flank of the Alliance.

Today, at the Air Transport Base 90, the ceremony organized on the occasion of the arrival in Romania of the first detachment, consisting of approximately 180 soldiers from the Portuguese Republic, which will be deployed in our country, took place, with the participation of the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Daniel Petrescu.

"Executing your missions in Romania is a valuable means of preserving peace. The Portuguese detachment will be integrated into national and allied structures, with the aim of increasing responsiveness, interoperability and, last but not least, to emphasize allied solidarity. The Romanian soldiers are waiting with interest to train, again, alongside the Portuguese troops.

We did our part. We have increased our own response capability and execute day and night, 24/7/365 activities in the fields of land, air and maritime forces. The presence of allied troops in Romania represents the new normal. I emphasize, once again, the fact that the adopted measures are eminently defensive, adapted to the security situation in our area of responsibility", declared General Petrescu.

The rest of the soldiers of the Portuguese detachment, as well as the military equipment, related materials and equipment, will arrive in Romania in the coming days. The Portuguese military will carry out, during the next six months, training activities together with military units of the Romanian Army."
