Volodymyr Zelensky hopes that Ukraine will very quickly reach the status of a candidate country for joining the European Union, even if it is in the midst of war, but this process will be a long one, years may pass until the country could be accepted in EU.

"Another step on Ukraine's path to the European Union.

I am honored to receive from Volodymyr Zelenski the answers to the European Commission's questionnaire, handed by Ursula von der Leyen only 10 days ago", said Matti Maasikas, the ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine (April 18, 2022).

The questionnaire is a formal tool through which the European Commission evaluates the current situation and the degree of readiness of the candidate countries to advance in the accession process."
