NATO Restarts Operation Sea Guardian in the Mediterranean Sea

NATO Restarts Operation Sea Guardian Mediterranean Sea

NATO announces the resumption of naval patrols in the western Mediterranean, the alliance taking this decision to increase the level of security among allied countries in the context of the war in Ukraine, and this is because Russia provokes wherever it can, so the measure is one that is commendable out of many points of view.

A submarine from Italy, air units from Canada, Portugal, Spain and other NATO naval units transiting the region will support the flagship OSG ESPS Reina Sofia.

The OSG operational unit is under the operational command of NATO's Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) in Northwood. Prior to the departure of the task force from Rota, a delegation of MARCOM experts met with the task force commander and its staff to better prepare for their activities in the western Mediterranean. The MARCOM team had the opportunity to discuss the specifics of the operation, including maritime air operations, submarine operations, intelligence, communication support, rules of engagement, among others.

In addition to daily maritime situational awareness (MSA) activities, these patrols focus specifically on monitoring sea lines of communication (SLOC), localized traffic patterns in international waters in coordination with national navies, deterrence of terrorism and threat mitigation to the address security in the Mediterranean Sea.

The GSO is non-Article 5 maritime security and an important key enabler for NATO to enhance its cooperation and interoperability with Allies and partner nations in the Mediterranean.
