The Minister of Health has published an urgent information for the Romanians in our country, one that must reach the eyes and ears of many people, and this is because it brings into discussion the problem of cholera vibrio in the bathing waters of the Dniester river area of ​​the Republic of Moldova.

The Minister of Health says that the strain that was isolated in this situation is not the one that causes the disease in humans, cholera is transmitted through the fecal-oral route only in countries where the respective bacteria exists, but in Romania there have been no more cases of cholera in the last 30 years.

"Regarding the information published in the press, related to the isolation of cholera vibrio in bathing waters from the Republic of Moldova in the area of ​​the Dniester River, the Romanian Ministry of Health specifies the following. Due to sporadic cases, the Republic of Moldova monitors untreated bathing waters for the presence of cholera vibrio.

The isolated strain is not classified as causing disease in humans. – Cholera is an infection that is transmitted through the fecal-oral route. Accidental consumption of contaminated water from unsanitary bathing areas can lead to infection in countries where there is a circulation of this bacterium.

No cases of cholera have been registered in Romania in the last 30 years. - The Ministry of Health, through the National Institute of Public Health, currently supervises acute diarrheal diseases in the summer season, and the counties in the border areas with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have been alerted for the rapid identification of any suspicion of cholera.

According to the order, the tablets will be distributed free of charge to the population by community pharmacies. Their list is available on the website of the Ministry of Health, in the "Potassium iodide distribution campaign" section. Within 7 days of the entry into force of the order, the county and Bucharest city public health departments transfer the 65 mg potassium iodide tablets to community pharmacies, with the support of drug distribution companies.

To obtain potassium iodide 65 mg, citizens will contact their family doctor, who must issue a prescription. Based on this, the pharmacies will supply the potassium iodide 65 mg tablets that belong to them. We specify the fact that informative materials on the correct use of potassium iodide 65 mg tablets will be available free of charge in pharmacies."
