Minister of Defense: Important Official Announcement regarding Romanian Military Pensions

Minister of Defense Important Official Announcement Romanian Military Pensions

The Minister of Defense sent an extremely important message regarding the pensions of the Romanian military, an extremely delicate subject that has generated many discussions among them, stating that he will not accept their interpretation as special pensions and the recalculation based on the principle of contribution.

The Minister of Defense says that the military receive a state pension, not a special pension, as in all of Europe, and in most NATO countries, it being thought based on the principle of gratitude towards the loyalty, sacrifices and privations suffered by the military during their career which they carried out.

"In the last few days, I have received hundreds of messages from military personnel in reserve, but also from soldiers in the exercise of their profession. I convey to the Romanian military, in reserve or active, the fact that I will not accept that military pensions are interpreted being special pensions and to be calculated according to the contributory principle or recalculated.

The Ministry of National Defense has already expressed a point of view on this subject and sent it to the Government, and if necessary, together with the MApN specialists, I will provide additional clarifications, including to the European Commission, to explain the state military pension system in Romania .

I insist on explaining to the public opinion that military pensions are state pensions, NOT special pensions. Military pensions can be found, similar to Romania, throughout Europe and in most NATO countries. State military pensions are based on the principle of gratitude towards the loyalty, sacrifices and privations suffered by soldiers, police and prison officers and their families during their military careers.

The establishment of the military pension, with tradition in the Romanian state, appeared as a necessity stemming from the professional status of the military, which imposes certain social prohibitions that the other categories of insured do not have. At the same time, the current system of military pensions is affected by a number of inequalities and must really be brought to principles of equity. Professional performance must be motivated at the level of other NATO armies.

I am permanently concerned that, directly proportional to the annual increase in revenues from the state budget, we develop the legal framework that ensures, on the one hand, a correct establishment, recalculation and/or updating of state military pensions in relation to the evolution of the system of salaries, and on the other hand, balance and equity between the levels of military pensions, established according to the time succession of normative acts, for different categories of pensioners."
