Minister of Energy: Last Minute Announcements, Decisions of National Importance

The Minister of Energy published a series of very important announcements of national interest for Romanians all over the country in the context of the war in Ukraine, and the blackmail made by Russia on the energy market, and this is because Romania wants to install small modular reactors in the coming years.

The Minister of Energy has presented this project repeatedly, and now he had a visit to the USA where he discussed both with representatives of the government and with representatives of the company that will deliver these small modular reactors to Romania, and will probably help to their installation and activation.

"We had a constructive debate at the Atlantic Council on the current challenges, which have changed the energy market, faced not only by Romania, but also by the USA. I conveyed that it is obvious that in the current geopolitical context, when energy is used as a weapon of blackmail, energy security can no longer be approached only as a national issue, but as a regional and global security issue.

That is why, in order to strengthen energy security, Romania aims to be a regional leader in Europe in the implementation of small modular reactor technology, an advanced technology with multiple economic, social and environmental benefits. At the same time, I conveyed that only through close cooperation, realistic exchanges of opinions, we can build constructive synergies based on mutual interest in the implementation of strategic projects based on the newest and most modern technologies for our energy future.

Our country has broad support from the USA. Today I had a series of working meetings with several members of the State Department. I met with CS Eliot Kang – Assistant Secretary – Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation – Department of State. His experience in the field of nuclear energy gave us the basis for a consistent and applied dialogue on the project of reactors 3 and 4 from Cernavodă, but also on the side of SMRs.

The discussions were also attended by Justin Friedman - Senior Advisor - US Department of State, who was present in Romania in May when we announced that the site of the first small modular reactor (SMR) in Romania will be the site of the former Doicești thermal power plant. We received assurances that our country has all the support for the development of the civil nuclear program.

Together with Jose W. Fernandez - Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment - US Department of State - we discussed the strengthening of the strategic partnership in the field of energy, the strengthening of bilateral and commercial relations between the two states."
