MApN announcement regarding Military Pensions in Romania, NATO and EU countries

Military pensions in Romania have been at the center of many discussions in our country in recent months, so the Ministry of Defense wants to provide some clarifications regarding their status, but also with a document made by two employees of the European Commission that does not represent the position of the institution, but only theirs.

Considering that the topic of pensions, of any kind, is one that quickly generates controversies, the explanations below are welcome in the context in which we are talking during a war on the borders of our country about the rights of those who defend Romania.

In the last two months, the topic of military pensions has returned, as it already happens, cyclically, in the last 10-12 years, to the attention of public opinion. This time, the fire of the debates has rekindled from the pension reform assumed in the PNRR, in which the inclusion of military pensions among the special ones would have been committed (a fact already proven to be a fake) and from an alleged official communication from the European Commission to the government in Bucharest that military pensions must be considered special and brought to order in the field of contribution (again false, because there is no such position officially expressed from Brussels, but only a study from the European Economy discussion Papers category, study entitled "Special Pensions in the EU". The paper in question is prepared by two employees of the Directorate General for Economy and Finance of the European Commission. You can find it either by searching on Google by the title of the paper.

At the beginning of this paper, it is very clearly stated that the views expressed in the study are those of the authors only and do not represent the official point of view of the Commission.

It would be interesting to see how this work came to be presented in the Romanian press as an official warning from Brussels, although it is not difficult to understand the motivation behind such a mystification. In any case, starting from concrete facts or from falsehoods, the episode generated a new wave of debates in public opinion in our country.
